Right to Information (RTI) Matters

Right to Information (RTI) matters concern requests for information from public authorities, and appeals when information is refused or delayed.

Requests and appeals under the Right to Information Act, 2005.

What this covers

  1. 01Drafting RTI applications
  2. 02First appeals
  3. 03Second appeals and complaints before information commissions
  4. 04Exemptions and third-party information
  5. 05Penalties for non-compliance

How it generally works

Under the Right to Information Act, 2005, any citizen can ask a public authority for information. The Public Information Officer must ordinarily reply within thirty days.

If the reply is unsatisfactory or not given, a first appeal lies to a senior officer within thirty days, and a second appeal to the Central or State Information Commission within ninety days.

Some information is exempt from disclosure, for example where it affects national security or is personal information with no public interest.
