How it generally works

Marriages can be registered under the applicable personal law or the Special Marriage Act, 1954; in Delhi, registration of marriages is required under the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014. A registration certificate is often needed for visas, passports and other formalities.

Family disputes are frequently resolved by a written family settlement, or by a settlement reached in court-annexed mediation which the court then records.

Courts generally uphold genuine family settlements entered into to keep peace within the family.
