How it generally works

A person whose ownership is denied can seek a declaration of title under section 34 of the Specific Relief Act, 1963, often together with possession or an injunction. A document that is void or voidable can be cancelled under section 31.

Title is traced through the chain of registered documents, inheritance, and revenue and municipal records. Gaps or defects in that chain are a common cause of disputes.

Demarcation of agricultural land boundaries is usually handled by revenue authorities rather than civil courts.
