How it generally works

Under the Copyright Act, 1957, copyright arises automatically when an original work is created. Registration is optional but useful as evidence.

The owner can sue for injunctions and damages where the work is copied or used without permission, subject to exceptions such as fair dealing.

Assignments and licences of copyright should be in writing and should state the rights, territory and duration.
